The Vagus Nerve

The vagus nerve is like a network connecting your brain to various organs in your body, including the heart and gut. It's part of your body's nervous system and helps manage emotions, communication between different body parts, and stress responses.

Vagal tone refers to the activity level of the vagus nerve. When someone has lower vagal tone, it means their nerve might not work as well in regulating certain body functions. It has been proven that for individuals with autism and ADHD, studies have found that their vagal tone tends to be lower compared to others. This might impact how they process emotions, handle stress, or interact with their surroundings. Researchers are still figuring out all the details, but this theory helps us understand a possible connection between these conditions and the functioning of the vagus nerve.

Hypnotherapy might help improve vagal tone indirectly by reducing stress and promoting relaxation. Stress can negatively impact vagal tone, and hypnotherapy techniques, such as deep relaxation, guided imagery, and suggestion, aim to calm the mind and body.

When a person is in a deeply relaxed state during hypnotherapy, it can reduce stress hormones, lower heart rate, and encourage a more balanced nervous system response. By decreasing stress levels, hypnotherapy may indirectly support better vagal tone, further supporting neurodiverse differences.
